Accreditation Assessment Team Invites Public Comment on MARTA Police Department
A team of assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) is examining all aspects of the MARTA Police Department’s policy and procedures, management, operations and support services.
“The MARTA Police Department was initially accredited in March of 1996. Verification by the team that the department has continued to meet the Commission’s state-of-the-art standards is part of a voluntary process to gain re-accreditation – a highly prized recognition of law enforcement professional excellence,” said Chief of System Safety, Security and Emergency Management Wanda Y. Dunham.
The MARTA Police Department must comply with 459 standards in order to remain accredited. Accreditation is for four years, during which the agency must submit annual reports showing continued compliance.
“The assessment team is composed of law enforcement practitioners from out-of-state agencies,” said Accreditation Manager for the MARTA Police Department Lieutenant Gregory L. Gamble. “The assessors will review written materials, interview individuals and visit offices, precincts and other areas where compliance can be witnessed.”
Once the Commission’s assessors complete their review of the agency, they report back to the full Commission, which will decide if the agency is to be reaccredited.
As part of the on-site assessment, the MARTA Police Department will hold a public information session where you may provide comments on Tuesday, Oct. 15 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the training room of MARTA Police Headquarters, located at 2400 Piedmont Road NE.
You may also provide comments to the assessment team by calling (404) 848-4992 on Tuesday, Oct. 15 between the hours of 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
Anyone wishing to submit written comments about the MARTA Police Department’s ability to comply with the standards for accreditation may send them to:
