Each night, more than 7,000 Atlanta residents face homelessness. For the past two years, The Junior League of Atlanta, Inc. (JLA) has partnered with the Atlanta Mission to mobilize and address the growing problem of homelessness that deeply affects our community.
Volunteers who serve with JLA’s Atlanta Mission team create and execute events throughout the year that support the overall mental, physical and financial wellness of women living at My Sister’s House. Volunteers have nicknamed their group, Team Mission Empower, to pay tribute to the incredible work being done by the Atlanta Mission dating back to 1938.
My Sister’s House is a 264-bed facility off Howell Mill Road, that provides overnight shelter and residential programs for homeless women, as well as for women with children. The program also provides childcare, counselors, referrals to job training programs and help in finding housing, medical, and legal resources. JLA volunteers often host Friday events on a number of topics including: financial literacy, vision board activities, health and wellness and much more.
Additionally, Team Mission Empower prepares hearty meals for residents along with career coaching workshops. Community leaders and other JLA members often give of their time to speak at the workshops on a variety of topics, including: Dress for Success, Perfecting the Interview, Social Media Etiquette, Professional Communication, Faith and Leadership and Job Search Resources.
In an effort to end homelessness, JLA volunteers will lace up their shoes for the Atlanta Mission’s annual 5K February 23. Hundreds of participants are expected to take part in the Race to End Homelessness. The registration fee covers one night of shelter and services for clients the Atlanta Mission serves.
More than 1,000 women and children are served by the Atlanta Mission each day and JLA and its members are grateful for the opportunity to positively impact their lives through volunteer and financial support. To learn more about partnering with JLA, click here.
