By Erin Drury Boorn, senior philanthropic advisor, Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta
This past week the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta hosted Coventry Edwards-Pitt, author of Raised Healthy, Wealthy and Wise for our annual Center for Family Philanthropy event. This event is a chance for our donors to learn more about how they want to work with their family to pass on their core values and share their philanthropic interests. The Center for Family Philanthropy was started in 2001 as a program to actively engage our donors and their families in philanthropy by hosting multigenerational family meetings, providing funding recommendations and taking families on site visits to nonprofits.
We have donors who approach their philanthropic journey in many ways, but more and more we’re seeing people who want this journey to be a collective one, one they share with their entire family. For some that might mean, ‘how do we make an impact today, or in our lifetime?’ For others, the goal is to leave a legacy that will be carried on by generations to come.
Edwards-Pitt shared common characteristics she had gathered from interviews she conducted with families who had raised independent and successful children. These characteristics included giving simple tasks designed to give children a strong sense of self-worth while building their work ethic, like chores at an early age and summer jobs as teens. She also reminded us that oftentimes, parents should make the hard choice to say ’no’ more often than ’yes’ to their children’s requests, even when ’yes’ is the easiest option.
Our Philanthropic Advisors work with many families, defined in many different ways, to help them on their philanthropic journey. Sometimes the conversation begins with values around work and giving, and sometimes it begins with sharing information on money and family assets, all of which are means that help us arrive at what is most important with our families.
